What Are The Different Types Of Awnings?
Whether you’re a homeowner or a business owner, an awning can improve aesthetics and provide much-needed shelter – it’s also the perfect way to extend on your living area. To help you understand the types of awnings that are available to you and to ensure you get exactly what it is you’re looking for, take a read through our simple guide to better understand the different types of awning.
Awning application types
- Patio awnings – Fixed to the wall, patio awnings typically extend over an outside seating area where there’s a patio or decking. This fixture can help homeowners to extend on their living area, offering a sheltered outdoor space where they can host parties and barbecues, relax and unwind in the fresh air, whilst being protected from the sun. Should it rain heavily, a patio awning can be neatly retracted back into its cassette for protection
- Balcony awning – Attached to overhangs, eaves or soffits, balcony awnings make for a more relaxing experience whilst you occupy your balcony. The height can be adjusted to your liking too, so you can maximise on both shade and privacy. With multiple fabrics to choose from, you can be sure that your balcony awning will only enhance your outdoors.
- Conservatory awnings – One of the most unique styles of awning, and a magnificent one at that, the conservatory awning is mounted onto an existing roof and provides exceptional temperature control. Thanks to its internal and external design, your conservatory’s climate can be managed easily with a remote control, so simply use the handset to retract and extend the awning depending on the weather.
- Veranda awnings – Wall-mounted, similar to that of a patio awning, veranda awnings have a fixed structure that remains in place even when the awning material has been retracted. Veranda awnings have many benefits including extra stability, thanks to their additional posts. One such benefit is weather protection, as they can be used come rain or shine, allowing a free-flow through the house and straight through to the outdoors. Another is garden furniture protection, as a veranda awning has a high UV filter that will prevent fabrics and plastics from fading. On top of all of that, you can enjoy star gazing at night – simply retract the awning fabric and look through the glass roof for a romantic evening under the night’s sky.
- Freestanding awnings – With no fixtures to the walls, the freestanding awning has a full structural framework that can be placed anywhere as it needn’t rely on being placed by a wall. Freestanding awnings can be positioned over a patio, decking, pool, lawn or other – the choice is yours. Popular in large open spaces, the freestanding awning is a sturdy open shelter that comes in various styles such as the butterfly and flat top.
- Vertical awnings – Essentially a more advanced window blind, the vertical awning is very much like your typical indoor blind but it’s an external fitting. The vertical awning has a drop-arm design, allowing it to extend away from the wall, and angled, to provide the optimal shading. The main benefit of a vertical awning is that it can provide side shading to the decking or patio area and increase your privacy.
- Domestic awnings and commercial awnings – Awnings are perfect for both homes and commercial settings. They provide shelter, improve aesthetics, increase floor space and provide a luxurious feel to any property or building. With plentiful styles and designs to suit varying budgets – you’ll be spoilt for choice!
Types of awnings cassette:
- Full cassette awnings retract the material and arms back into the casing for protection and neat storage.
- Semi cassette awnings provide some protection for the material when retracted and will cover the top and sides but the bottom will remain open.
- Open awnings do not have a cassette to roll back into but depending on the installation, it’s likely that it’ll be protected from overhanging parts of a property or building.
- Coverboards are typically fitted to the wall above the awning, like a mini roof for protection.
